All the officer’s wives showed up for beach day and a few other old ladies and family members in the crew. I thought most of them would be older, like Miranda, but there were a few who were my age, chatting and laughing and completely at ease. They obviously didn’t have brothers trying to control every aspect of their lives. I was beyond jealous, especially when we got to the beach and the two guys who were supposed to be watching us stayed back by the bikes. They could still see us, but they didn’t follow, and they didn’t bother us.

“So, Allie. How long are you in San Diego?” Mariah, someone named Buzz’s daughter, called out from her spot under the umbrella. She had a pale complexion and didn’t want to burn, so she stayed hidden under the shade.

“Dunno. Depends on how quickly I can get Caleb off my back.”

Miranda snorted, and I shot her a look, scowling. She still thought Caleb was my old man and no matter how many times I told her we were just messing around, she didn’t believe me. Caleb wasn’t going to claim me and I didn’t want him to get murdered by my brother for trying, either.

“Oh, you got a man? Someone in the MC?”

Miranda interrupted me before I could reply. “She’s got an ol’ man. She just doesn’t agree with it.”

A bunch of them started snickering, and when I frowned, Jodie spoke up. “We’re no stranger to the way these guys make a claim. You aren’t the first to fight against it, you won’t be the last.”

I snorted. “I know. My best friend tried to have a one-night stand with the Prez back home and now they’re getting married. But it’s not like that with Caleb. Not only do we have my brother to contend with, there’s a lot of history there and I’m not sure I’m willing to go there with him again.”

“What kind of history?”

I sighed. “We dated in high school. He dumped me to join the MC. I still haven’t forgiven him for it.”

Jodie winced. “Ouch. Dumped you to join the same MC as your brother? What’d you do to deserve that?”

“She didn’t do shit. Men are idiots, the lot of ‘em. I’m guessin’ he was worried he wouldn’t get in if he was already dating a club sister?” Miranda asked with a scowl.

Shrugging, I drew on the sand with my fingers. “Dunno. He never told me why. He just said we couldn’t be together anymore, then the next time I saw him he was prospecting. I was too pissed to ask him why.”

They all started commenting about my idiot ex and how hard it must’ve been to be forced to be in the same vicinity as someone who broke my heart. I didn’t want to tell them it basically set me down the path I was on now. Most of the stuff I did that the guys considered ‘troublemaking’ was to lash out at Zayne and Caleb. If Zayne was pissing me off, I’d be reckless on purpose just to spite him.
